A Treasure Binding is a luxurious book cover using gold or silver metalwork and inlaid with gemstones and/or ivory panels. They were particularly popular during the Middle Ages but were a luxury affordable only by the elite, commissioned by churches, royalty and wealthy private collectors

The gems and gold created an impression of richness but also served to offer a foretaste of the bejewelled nature of the Celestial City and particular gemstones were believed to have actual powerful properties when touched

This stunning example of a Treasure Binding, the Codex Aureus of St. Emmeram, an illuminated gospel book made in 870 AD for the Holy Roman Emperor Charles II, featuring a beautiful relief cover in gold and inlaid with gemstones and pearls was the inspiration for our present necklace and matching drop earrings SET bringing a striking medieval colour palette back to life in all its brilliance and vibrancy
