A striking multi-coloured necklace and drop earring SET entirely handcrafted from semi-precious Lapis Lazuli, Agate, Turquoise Howlite, Lemon Jade and Brass beads and discs, all of different shapes and sizes, on a gold plated magnetic ball clasp and gold plated hooks.
This necklace was inspired by an original Persian Achaemenid piece dating from about 350 BC., now at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
The Achaemenid Empire, also called the First Persian Empire, was founded by Cyrus the Great in 550 BC. It was the greatest empire the world had ever seen stretching from the Balkans and Egypt in the west to Central Asia and the Indus Valley in the East.
This was a time of great artistic development which combined a mixture of styles from the multi-cultural lands they governed. As a result the jewellery, luxury and wealth of the Persians became legendary throughout Classical Antiquity.
The Achaemenid Empire has been recognised as the first model of a successful centralised administration which inspired the governance of several later empires.
The Achaemenid Empire was conquered by Alexander the Great by 330 BC., after whose death most of the territory came under the rule of the Ptolemaic kingdom, thereby marking the beginning of the Hellenistic period.
